OLYMPUS (PARIS) TRIP
11 January 2011
I was thrilled to find this Olympus Trip 35 film camera in a glass cabinet at another Goodwill thrift. I love these little guys so I rescued it. This pocket size baby will be perfect for my Paris trip. While everyone's at the super Alt Summit, I'll be skipping around on the Champs-Elysées either next weekend or the following weekend. I plan to pack a few film cameras and shoot a dozen rolls. But I read it's pouring over there which makes it a little tough for taking photos. It'll still be beautiful and I'll make the best of it, I'm sure. At least I have my new boots to pull me through the rain. So...how are the vintage, thrift stores, and flea markets in Paris? I hope I'll walk into pots after pots of goodies!

ooh paris! what a wonderful place to take photos and thrift.
I just picked up a Trip a few weeks ago, one that is begging to be redecorated (will be wallpapering it). It's in very bad repair, but I had to bring it home and give it a second life.
Also, I ♥ Paris. Making plans to go next year, so will be intrigued by what thrift/vintage/flea markets you find when you go!
Sara - It's my first time. I can't wait!
t & c - Sounds great! I love a fab camera outfit. I hope the goods will find me when I'm there.
I envy your photog skills!!!!!!! I WANT to improve, but I don't really know how to go about it...I tried reading books, but the ones we have don't speak my language!!!
We were in Paris in the fall....vintage brocantes hunting of course!...luckily, my better half is an enabler! He totally supports my addiction!
check out my post on vanves...and place d'aligre fleas:

We also walked around the vintage stores near St Paul's in the Marais. Went to Merci concept store just to see...and zara home is pretty great for cheap and cheerful housewares...
The champs isn't my favorite place to shop (but must be done at least once!!!)...I prefer the Marais...
Have a great time, yo!
ps. Next time I go, I really want to hit up a "vide-grenier" ...from what I can tell, they are big garage sales...so I think things would be cheaper than the flea markets (the fleas are a bit pricey)
It's gonna be perfect for Paris, I can't wait to see your pictures. And don't worry it's not pouring here, or at least not now. ;-)
You should definitely go in the Marais, St Paul...
and if you need someone to keep you company and have a cup of tea, I'll live just behind "Beaubourg". ;-)
Have a nive trip.
Shannon - Wowzers! Thanks for the comprehensive guide to Parisian thriftyness. It all looks and sounds like a grand ol time. I'm gonna look into all that fun stuff you mentioned.
About photography, it's a lot of trial and error. I get my inspiration from flipping through some of the greats, like William Eggleston, Saul Leiter, and Luigi Ghirri. Flickr is great, too. The photo blogger, Hilda Grahnat is marvelous.
Doesn't this Ghirri photo make your heart explode? http://www.aperture.org/exposures/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/atelier-giorgio-morandi-grizzana.jpg
Thanks again for the tips, Shannon. I'm gonna put them to good use. You rock!
E. - Thanks a bunch for the recommendation. Looks like I'll be all over Marais. And I'm no fella who turns down a good cup of tea and company. You're too sweet, thank you. Will be in touch!

Paris is one of my fav places on earth! I have been about 7 times...I am spoiled!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I will check out all those photog nods, merci!!!!!
Dab, my friend, we may well be in Paris at the same time - how exciting! My and my guy are going over next weekend - I just checked the weather and it's meant to have stopped raining by then (fingers crossed!) If it has stopped raining it will be a chilly low of 1 degree!
Well it was raining here in Paris today but it is supposed to stop for the weekend... Normally you'll find the best thrifting in the garage sales, but they happen mainly april-june and sept-nov so unfortunately not the right season. You should go to the flea market in Porte de Clignancourt, open Sat-Mon, it's huge so don't stop at the first stands but continue further inside the market. Prices can be a bit high but you really find everything and it is definately worth visiting. The Marais area is great for shopping and eating out, and you'll find vintage stores in the "village St Paul" in the Marais. I just passed by this afternoon and I saw that there will be a fleamarket there this weekend. I can also recommend the area around the Canal St Martin, a lot of nice shops and restaurants have popped up there over the last few years.
The Emmaus thrift stores can be quite good too. I always go to the Emmaus which is close to where I live in the western suburbs, I know there is one in Paris as well but I've never been there.
Some nice design stores to visit are Merci, Fleux, Home autour du monde, Galerie Sentou, they are all more or less within the Marais. The official sales started in France today so there are some nice offers around.
But the best way to experience Paris is to just walk around, you'll find loads of nice little shops and restaurants everywhere! Have a great time and let us know all about your trip when you're back!
Oh I forget the other fleamarkets: Porte de Vanves, Montreuil, and Place d'Aligre, they are smaller than Clignancourt so a bit easier to get an overview!
Vanves is the place the locals frequent. Saturday and Sunday mornings only. Porte de Vanves Metro stop and walk two blocks. Bring cash and get there early, as by 11 a.m., it's crowded. Rain or shine, it's open. Clignacourt is fun, but it's huge and expensive. You'll probably spend most of a day there. Open Sat., Sun. and Mon. Metro Line 4 to Porte de Clignacourt. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. usually. Don't forget to bargain! Bon chance!

Anna G. - Anna oh Anna, you are incredible! Thank you so much for the wonderful insights. I'm gonna need a freight boat to ship all the beautiful things I find in Paris. And did I hear you say SALE? Sweetness! I'm so excited and can't wait to completely lose myself there. I'll keep you posted on this fabulous trip.
TARA - Vanves looks promising. I definitely wanna mingle more with the locals which means I need to brush up on my French and learn a few bargaining phrases. Google trans. taught me this: Pouvez-vous me donner un meilleur prix? Is that right? I'm laughing so hard because French is difficult for me. I thought maybe knowing three languages would help, but no. Thanks for including the hours and Metro stops. That totally helps. Merci-Merci!
FROMBLANK - Thank you! Nice to have you stop by. See ya around.
