SOME FINE THINGS

01 March 2011

I didn't finish everything I wanted over the weekend but I started a bunch of projects. One of them includes some woodcut action. I forget how difficult and intense it can be. I nicked my precious Nordiska side table which made my heart ache. But my girl, Margaret knocked some sense into me by saying, "better the side table than your finger!" Indubitably, M!

Hopefully I'll get to pull some prints from the new block. I added two new prints to my print shop, TOSS & TURN. They are digital prints of a four color run lithograph. They're self-portraits, can you tell? I'll be adding many more prints soon.

Then I treated myself to Doughboys' delicious red velvet cake. I'm not a cake person but this is so good. It's not too sweet and it's super moist. Yum. Lastly, the photo with the wood and gold panels is a thrifty teaser. It's a major hunky beast, hunkier than my heartmate and the best part, I got it for a song!

  1. Ah yes, the joys of block printing. I have been meaning to start a new block for some time now, although I've never carved wood- just linoleum.

I can't wait to see what you come up with!

  3. Wood block! Could you be any cooler? We have to begin some cross-oceanic print association, seriously. DUNST PRINTS. I already have the name.
    Sorted.
Also what is this supernaturally red cake? Is that safe? What food can be so colourful? America is a wondrous place.
Do you think your stomach is that colour after eating it? Like a kool-aid mustache but internally? I NEED ANSWERS! Ha!

you're not a cake person? what? I will convert you, soon you can't live without cake/cookies/pies/tarts.
Looking forward to seeing more of your carving skills, just watch those digits.

  5. I'm so happy to see you are carving. I can't wait to see the prints!

I inherited some woodcutting tools (that I use sometimes with linoleum). Do you have any suggestions for what type of place/where to get the sharpened?

  6. @ erin Woodcut is pretty tough but there's more depth. I like linoleum. It cuts way smoother.

@ Cassandra It's really fun, you'll have to try it out sometimes.

@ Süsk Yes to print association! That's a fantastic idea! Ok, that 'supernaturally red cake' is in fact, pretty toxic! But who cares when it's so good. It's injected with at least two full bottles of red food coloring. Whoever thought of this is sick. And yep, it will make you pee kool-aid!

    @ ChantaleP Thanks girl!

@ Paper Pastries Devil, you are! The ONLY sweet thing I can't live without is ice cream.

@ Sarah Marguerite You can easily sharpen the tools at home. All you will need is a sharpening stone. You can pick that up at your art store or Amazon. And then you will have to sharpen it properly. Here's a guide I just found: http://www.1000woodcuts.com/Studionotes/sharpen.htm Hope that helps. Yay woodcuts!
